Earth 8: Pearl Ocean, Jade Land

Artist Statement: Pearl Ocean, Jade Land

The artist likens the earth to the beauty of pearls and jade by using metallic greens, silver sheens and accenting purples in a traditional mapping of the planet. Both pearls and jade are made from earth’s minerals—pearls by organisms and jade by earth forces. Unlike a single pearl or a jade stone, the components of the earth are in constant flux and evolution. The artist sometimes wishes that we could freeze time the way these minerals stay transfixed. This globe is not painted as a swirling changing world but rather as a stable one frozen in time.
